Swapping a light fixture for a ceiling fan
By Pro Install Greg · Updated · 2 min read
You can replace a ceiling light with a fan when the electrical box in the ceiling is listed and marked for fan support. A standard light fixture box is not built for the weight and constant motion of a fan, even if it looks the same. If the box is not fan-rated, it has to be replaced with a fan-rated box or brace before the fan goes up.
Key takeaways
- Ceiling fans must hang from an electrical box that is listed and marked as suitable for fan support.
- A standard light fixture box is not strong enough for a fan's weight and the vibration of the spinning blades.
- Fan-rated boxes are marked with the maximum fan weight they support.
- Going the other way, replacing a fan with a light fixture, needs no special box.
- Adding a box where there is none, or running a new circuit or switch, is licensed electrical work.

How to tell if the box is fan-rated
- Turn off the breaker for the fixture and confirm the power is off with a tester.
- Take down the existing fixture and look inside the box.
- Look for a marking stamped or printed inside it: fan-rated boxes say they are acceptable for fan support and list a maximum weight.
- Check how it is fastened: a fan box is screwed to a joist or hung from a brace between joists, not held by drywall clips.
No marking means it is not rated for a fan, however solid it feels.
What changes between a light and a fan
| Light fixture | Ceiling fan | |
|---|---|---|
| Load on the box | Static weight only | Weight plus constant motion and vibration |
| Box needed | Standard ceiling box | Box listed and marked for fan support |
| Ceiling height | Any | Blades need clearance from the floor and walls |
| Controls | Wall switch | Wall switch, pull chain or remote |
Where it becomes electrician work
Swapping a fixture for a fan on a fan-rated box and the existing wiring is a fixture replacement. Replacing or adding the box itself, running a new circuit, adding a separate switch for the light kit, or putting a fan where no fixture exists is licensed electrical work. We handle the first and refer the rest to a licensed electrician, and we will tell you which side of that line your ceiling is on before anything comes down.
